Feeding the community

Sibahle Community soup kitchen was born in Dr Skye’s community service year at Tladi clinic in Soweto. Serving a community who had access to medicines, but not meals to follow them was a very saddening experience. Born out of a need to support chronically ill patients with a hot meal to accompany their medicines, Skye partnered with Mam Selina Nhlapo, a community member and regular at the clinic to start a soup kitchen and veggie garden. In the first few years of Sibahle, the garden produce helped to support the kitchen. Sibahle has evolved to source their garden produce now from Tim Nectar farms, an urban agripreneur who grows with a regenerative farming mindset.

Health with Heart now supports the Kitchen with two other business and Selina and her assistant prepare about 200 meals a week. We would love to help other community service doctors set up similar systems at other Gauteng clinics. All clinics have water, land, security and a kitchen. It feels like a natural next step for Sibahle to grow to serve other communities too. If you would like to help make this possible with a monthly donation or with your time, please get in touch with us.

Conscious about sustainability

Clinics should serve as wellsprings for education around health, food security and sustainability. By creating food gardens within communities we can model behaviour change for better communal wellbeing. Sourcing produce from urban farms that are pesticide free and regenerative, helps to encourage and grow a slow food culture that pedestalizes nutrition over aesthetics. Chemical free foods foster less ill, better nourished communities.
