1. Can you tell us a little about yourself and what inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare?
I am 27 years old and have had the opportunity to call a few places home over the years. I was born in Gauteng, completed my schooling in KwaZulu-Natal, and then returned to Gauteng to pursue my studies. I studied a Bachelor of Clinical Medical Practice at the University of Pretoria before graduating from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Healthcare has always felt like a natural path for me. I’ve always been passionate about helping people, and my interest started at a very young age when I completed my first First Aid course at just nine years old. Since then, I’ve always been the first person to jump in and help whenever needed. Being able to make a difference in someone’s life, whether in a big moment or a small one, is what continues to inspire me every day.
2. What drew you to join the Health with Heart team, and what excites you most about your new role at the Fairland practice?
I was drawn to Health with Heart because of its strong focus on functional and patient-centred healthcare. I love the idea of looking beyond symptoms and working with patients to improve their overall wellbeing.
What excites me most is the opportunity to work alongside the incredible doctors and team at the Fairland practice while building meaningful relationships with patients. Every patient has a unique story, and I look forward to being part of their healthcare journey.
3. As a Clinical Associate, what does a typical day look like for you, and how do you support patients on their health journeys?
One of the things I enjoy most about healthcare is that no two days are ever the same. A typical day requires flexibility and the ability to adapt to whatever comes through the door.
My role includes consulting with patients, diagnosing and treating conditions within my scope of practice, assisting doctors with procedures such as blood collection and injections, and helping manage emergency situations when they arise. I also ensure that our clinical supplies are organised and readily available so that our team can provide seamless patient care.
I am particularly passionate about preventative healthcare. I make it a priority to ensure that my patients stay on track with their health screenings and routine checks, whether that’s monitoring blood pressure and glucose levels, arranging blood tests, performing Pap smears, or ensuring prostate screenings are up to date. My goal is to help patients take charge of their health before problems arise.
4. What aspect of patient care are you most passionate about, and why?
I am particularly passionate about preventative medicine. While genetics and other external factors certainly influence our health, I believe that many people can significantly improve their wellbeing through small, sustainable lifestyle changes.
Over the years, I have witnessed first-hand how seemingly small changes can completely transform someone’s health and quality of life. I have seen patients improve their blood pressure, blood sugar levels, energy, and overall wellbeing simply by making consistent, healthier choices each day. These changes don’t just benefit the individual—they allow people to be more present for their families, enjoy life more fully, and often avoid serious health complications down the line.
Helping patients understand that better health doesn’t require perfection—just consistent, positive choices—is something I find incredibly rewarding. Watching someone take control of their health and experience the benefits for themselves is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job.
5. What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your healthcare career so far?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to trust your instincts. Healthcare is not always black and white, and often we find ourselves navigating the grey areas.
I’ve also learned that kindness and compassion cost nothing but can mean everything to someone. Patients may not always remember every detail of a consultation, but they will remember how they were treated and how they felt when they left.
6. Health with Heart places a strong emphasis on compassionate, patient-centred care. What does that philosophy mean to you in practice?
I live by the belief that compassion is one of the most important values we should all have in society. As healthcare workers we experience people at their most vulnerable moments, it is so important to remember this and to remember that life can change at any moment, and we could easily be on the other side of that examination bed.
Compassion is one of the most important values I believe we can have as individuals. As healthcare professionals, we meet people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. It’s important to remember that behind every symptom, diagnosis, or test result is a person with fears, hopes, and challenges. Treating patients with empathy, dignity, and respect is just as important as providing excellent medical care.
7. What advice would you give to someone who wants to take better care of their health but feels overwhelmed about where to start?
I always tell my patients that nobody is expecting them to run the Comrades Marathon tomorrow or climb Mount Kilimanjaro next week.
The first step is making the decision that you want to prioritise your health. Once you’ve made that commitment, you’re already halfway there. From there, focus on small, achievable changes. Choose fruit instead of chips, grilled chicken instead of fried chicken, or take the stairs instead of the lift.
Small choices made consistently can have a remarkable impact over time. Most importantly, remember that health is about balance, not perfection. A slice of cake every now and then is absolutely okay!
8. Outside of work, what are some of your interests, hobbies, or wellness practices that help you stay balanced and energised?
I try my best to live a balanced lifestyle, although I’m the first to admit that it’s not always easy. This is something that helps me relate to many of my patients who face the same challenges.
I enjoy spending time outdoors, exploring new places, and taking in some fresh air whenever I can. I love trying new experiences and activities that push me slightly outside my comfort zone. That being said, if it involves jumping off a building with only a rope attached, I’ll happily sit that one out—we all have our limits!
9. As you begin this new chapter at Health with Heart, what message would you like to share with the Fairland community and the patients you’ll be caring for?
I am incredibly excited to join the Fairland community and become part of your healthcare journey. My goal is to create a welcoming environment where patients feel heard, supported, and empowered to take control of their health.
10. What’s one thing your colleagues or patients might be surprised to learn about you?
Most people are surprised to learn that I’m quite different outside of the consultation room than they might expect. While I have a caring and compassionate side, I’m also a bit of a tomboy at heart. I love fast cars, enjoy spending time at the shooting range, and used to train in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) a few years ago. I guess it’s proof that healthcare professionals don’t always fit the stereotype!
